How You Can Use McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity Benefits
Archways to Opportunity is McDonald’s U.S. education benefit program, launched in 2015 and administered through Bright Horizons EdAssist Solutions. Since launch, McDonald’s has awarded more than $125 million in tuition assistance to over 45,000 employees. The program is one of the most established fast-food education benefits in the country and covers far more than tuition, including free high school diploma completion, English language learning, and free career advising for employees and their families.
The program is not a single uniform benefit. Funding amounts vary by your role and by whether you work at a corporately owned restaurant or a franchisee location. Understanding which tier applies to you is the most important first step before planning around this benefit.
For a broader comparison of how Archways to Opportunity stacks up against programs at Amazon, Walmart, Target, UPS, and FedEx, see the complete employer tuition assistance guide at marketingcollege.org/how-to-use-employer-tuition-assistance/.
The Most Important Thing to Know First: Corporate vs. Franchise
This is the detail most guides skip, and it causes the most confusion among McDonald’s employees.
McDonald’s restaurants in the U.S. are operated in two ways: corporately owned restaurants (called McOpCo locations) run directly by McDonald’s, and franchise restaurants run by independent Owner/Operators. Approximately 95% of U.S. McDonald’s locations are franchises.
For McOpCo employees, Archways to Opportunity participation is automatic. Your eligibility is pre-verified through McDonald’s Corporation and confirmed in the EdAssist portal.
For franchise employees, your Owner/Operator must have opted into the Archways to Opportunity program. Most do, but participation is not universal. Before making any plans around this benefit, confirm with your manager or general manager whether your specific location participates. If they do not participate, the tuition assistance benefit is not available to you at that location, regardless of your tenure or hours.
Funding Tiers: How Much Does McDonald’s Pay?
Archways to Opportunity does not pay a flat amount for all employees. Annual funding depends on your role and employment type.
McOpCo (Corporate) Employees
- Full-time Store Manager Trainee, Certified Swing Manager, Department Manager, or General Manager: Up to $5,250 per year
- Crew, Floor Supervisor, Shift Manager Trainee, Primary Maintenance, or other part-time employee: Up to $2,500 per year
Requirements for McOpCo employees:
- Employed for at least 90 cumulative days (part-time and crew)
- Average of 15 hours per week or more (part-time and crew)
- Performance rating of “significant performance” or better, maintained throughout the course
Franchise Employees
- Full-time restaurant manager or staff (minimum 30 hours per week): Up to $3,000 per year
- Restaurant crew, part-time manager, or part-time office staff (average 15 hours per week): Up to $2,500 per year
Requirements for franchise employees:
- Your Owner/Operator participates in Archways to Opportunity
- Employed by the same Franchise Owner/Operator for at least 90 cumulative days
- Average 15 hours per week (crew and part-time) or minimum 30 hours per week (managers)
- In good standing as determined by your Owner/Operator
- Request approved by your Franchise Owner/Operator before funds are issued
One critical rule for all tiers: Archways to Opportunity covers tuition and course fees that are not already covered by scholarships or grants that do not need to be repaid. If you receive a grant that fully covers your tuition, you are not eligible to also use Archways funds for those same expenses. If a grant covers only part of your tuition, Archways can cover the remaining eligible costs.

What Archways to Opportunity Covers
Covered
- Tuition and course fees at any accredited approved school
- Required textbooks (reimbursed separately via payroll after submitting receipts)
Not Covered
- Tuition already paid by a scholarship or grant you do not have to repay
- Room and board
- Transportation
- Application or graduation fees
What counts as an approved school: Any two- or four-year public or private college or university, business, technical or vocational school, or graduate and post-graduate school accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. You are not limited to McDonald’s official partner schools. The benefit can be used at hundreds of accredited institutions in the Bright Horizons EdAssist network.
No repayment required: Archways to Opportunity does not generally require employees to repay tuition assistance that has already been awarded, provided program guidelines were followed. However, you must remain actively employed and in good standing while enrolled. Funding stops if you leave the company, but you do not owe back what has already been paid.
The Digital Marketing and AI course at marketingcollege.org/digital-marketing-course/ qualifies as an eligible program under employer tuition assistance guidelines and is designed specifically for working adults who need fully online, flexible training they can complete while working full-time.
Official College Partners: Where the Benefit Goes Furthest
McDonald’s has four officially named college partners that offer specifically negotiated tuition discounts for Archways to Opportunity participants. You can use your tuition assistance at any accredited school in the Bright Horizons network, but the partner schools are where your annual benefit stretches furthest because their discounted tuition rates are structured to work with Archways funding amounts.
Colorado Technical University (CTU): 100% Tuition Coverage Option
CTU is the most strategically important partnership in Archways to Opportunity. CTU offers a Commitment Grant to eligible McDonald’s employees that, when combined with the Archways tuition assistance award, covers 100% of online undergraduate tuition including eBooks and student fees. This means a crew member eligible for $2,500 per year in Archways funding can attend CTU and pay nothing out of pocket for tuition.
CTU is regionally accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and offers online bachelor’s and associate’s degrees in business administration, accounting, information technology, cybersecurity, criminal justice, healthcare management, project management, and more. McDonald’s employees can also earn college credit for their Hamburger University training through CTU’s prior learning assessment, which can reduce the time and cost required to complete a degree.
CTU runs on 5-week terms. You must enter accurate course start and end dates in EdAssist when submitting your application.
Western Governors University (WGU)
WGU is a private nonprofit online university accredited by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). It uses a competency-based model where you pay a flat rate per six-month term rather than per credit. A motivated McDonald’s employee who moves quickly through coursework can complete multiple courses within a single term, making the annual Archways cap go further at WGU than at schools that charge per credit.
Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU)
SNHU is a regionally accredited nonprofit online university offering a wide range of associate’s, bachelor’s, and certificate programs. It is one of the largest online universities in the U.S. and offers a well-established support infrastructure for working adult students.
Bellevue University
Bellevue University is a regionally accredited nonprofit university offering online bachelor’s and master’s degree programs structured for working adults, with flexible scheduling and transfer credit-friendly policies.
Note: McDonald’s states it cannot recommend specific colleges to restaurant employees and encourages thorough research into each school before enrolling.
The Four Programs Under Archways to Opportunity
Most people only know about the tuition assistance component. Archways to Opportunity actually includes four distinct programs:
- Tuition Assistance: Annual funding for college coursework at accredited schools, as described throughout this guide. This is the primary benefit most employees use.
- Career Online High School: A free, fully funded high school diploma program for McDonald’s employees who never completed high school. Offered through an accredited online program with a self-paced format designed for working adults.
- English Under the Arches: Free English language learning programs for employees, available from beginner through advanced levels in a flexible online format.
- Education and Career Advising: Free college and career advising services available to McDonald’s employees and their families. Advisors help with school selection, financial aid navigation, career planning, and academic support. The advising benefit extends to family members, which is a meaningful differentiator from most employer education programs that restrict benefits to the employee only.
How to Apply: Step-by-Step
Before You Start: 45 Days Before Your Course Begins
Applications can be submitted up to 45 days before your course start date. Gather the following before you begin:
- Your personal information including the last 4 digits of your SSN
- Your employee information: start date, current role, and average hours worked
- Your restaurant address (searchable by ZIP code in the portal)
- Your school name and the official start and end dates of your upcoming session
- Whether you are receiving any scholarships or grants that do not need to be repaid
- If attending CTU: your CTU student ID and course details
Step 1: Create Your EdAssist Account
- McOpCo employees: Go to mcdmcopco.edassist.com
- Franchise employees: Go to mcdoperator.edassist.com
If you already have an account, log in to your existing account and do not create a duplicate. Use the store locator to find your restaurant address and complete the registration questions. This becomes your permanent tuition assistance account for Archways to Opportunity.
Step 2: Submit a New Application
Click “New Application” on your EdAssist homepage. If you are unable to proceed, you do not currently meet the eligibility requirements. Verify your employment details in your profile or contact your supervisor.
Fill in your area of study, employer program, education provider (your school), and accurate course start and end dates. Declare whether you are receiving any scholarships or grants. Review all information carefully and click “Submit Application.”
Step 3: Request Textbook Reimbursement
After submitting your tuition application, go to “Actions Needed” on your homepage to submit a separate textbook request. Enter book details and costs, upload receipts, and submit. Textbook awards are paid via payroll as reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses.
Step 4: Receive Your Letter of Credit
Once approved, you will receive a two-page Letter of Credit (LOC) by email. This is the most important document in the process. You must deliver the LOC to your school as soon as possible. EdAssist does not send it on your behalf. The LOC is valid for 90 days from the issue date.
Your school will then invoice Bright Horizons EdAssist. After review, Bright Horizons mails a check directly to your school. You will receive email confirmation when payment is made.
If your school does not accept direct billing, contact EdAssist support via live chat on the portal homepage. They will help you upload your itemized tuition bill directly.
Step 5: After You Complete Your Courses
Log back into your EdAssist account and upload your transcript or grade report showing satisfactory completion. You must submit passing grades before you can submit another application. If you receive an unsuccessful grade in any course, you will be suspended from receiving additional tuition assistance for the remainder of that benefit year.
Managers at McOpCo must submit transcripts within 90 days of course completion. Failure to do so may result in repayment of the assistance through the payroll process.
Application deadline: You have until December 31st each year to submit your application for courses that end in that same calendar year.
Support: EdAssist live chat is available on the portal homepage. You can also call Bright Horizons customer care at 844-358-1622, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. EST.
McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity vs. Other Employer Programs
| Program | Annual Max | Payment Method | Lifetime Cap | Wait Period |
| McDonald’s Archways | $2,500-$5,250 | Direct bill via LOC | No lifetime cap | 90 days |
| Amazon Career Choice | $2,625-$5,250 | Prepaid | No lifetime cap | 90 days |
| Target Dream to Be | 100% select / $10,000 other | Prepaid via Guild | None stated | Day 1 |
| Walmart Live Better U | $3,650/year full cost | Prepaid via Guild | None | Day 1 |
| UPS Earn and Learn | Up to $25,000 total | Reimbursement | $25,000 lifetime | Immediate |
Key differentiator for McDonald’s: Unlike Amazon and Target which limit you to partner school networks, Archways to Opportunity lets you use your benefit at any accredited institution in the U.S. This is meaningful flexibility. The tradeoff is that the annual cap is modest relative to the cost of most four-year programs, so strategic school selection and stacking with financial aid is essential.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does McDonald’s offer tuition assistance?
Yes. McDonald’s offers tuition assistance through its Archways to Opportunity program, which has been active since 2015. The program pays up to $5,250 per year for eligible corporate (McOpCo) employees and up to $2,500 to $3,000 per year for eligible franchise employees, depending on role and hours worked.
Do you have to pay back McDonald’s tuition assistance?
No. Archways to Opportunity does not generally require repayment of tuition assistance that has already been awarded, as long as program guidelines were followed during the application and course period. If you leave McDonald’s, future funding stops, but you do not owe back what has already been paid out.
Does McDonald’s pay 100% of tuition?
McDonald’s does not pay 100% of tuition directly through the Archways benefit alone. However, eligible employees who attend Colorado Technical University (CTU) can combine their Archways tuition assistance with CTU’s Commitment Grant to achieve 100% coverage of online undergraduate tuition, including eBooks and fees.
Does my McDonald’s location participate in Archways to Opportunity?
If you work at a corporately owned (McOpCo) restaurant, you are automatically covered. If you work at a franchise location, your Owner/Operator must have opted into the program. Confirm participation with your manager or general manager before planning around this benefit.
What schools can I use McDonald’s tuition assistance for?
You can use Archways to Opportunity funding at any accredited two- or four-year college, university, vocational school, or graduate school recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. You are not limited to McDonald’s official college partners. The Bright Horizons EdAssist network includes 200+ partner institutions that offer additional discounts.
How does the Letter of Credit work?
After your application is approved, you receive a two-page Letter of Credit (LOC) by email. You must deliver this to your school’s billing office as soon as possible. EdAssist does not send it for you. Your school then invoices Bright Horizons, who pays the school directly by check. The LOC is valid for 90 days from the issue date.
Can part-time McDonald’s employees get tuition assistance?
Yes. Part-time crew members and staff who have been employed for at least 90 cumulative days and work an average of 15 hours per week are eligible for up to $2,500 per year in tuition assistance.
Can McDonald’s tuition assistance be combined with financial aid?
Yes, with an important caveat. Archways to Opportunity only covers tuition expenses that are not already covered by grants or scholarships you do not have to repay. If a grant covers 100% of your tuition, you cannot use Archways for those same costs. If a grant covers 50%, Archways can cover the remaining 50%. Loans that must be repaid are treated differently. You can use Archways to avoid taking those loans. Visit marketingcollege.org/tuition-and-funding/ for more on how to stack multiple funding sources effectively.
What other benefits does Archways to Opportunity include besides tuition?
Archways to Opportunity includes four programs: tuition assistance for college coursework, free high school diploma completion through Career Online High School, free English language learning through English Under the Arches, and free education and career advising services for employees and their families.
