Amazon Career Choice is Amazon’s flagship employee education benefit, launched in 2012 and now available in 14 countries. In the U.S., the program pays 100% of tuition, books, and fees for eligible hourly employees pursuing certificates, associate degrees, and bachelor’s degrees at more than 400 approved partner institutions — with no lifetime cap on how many years you can use the benefit.

Career Choice’s four national online education partners are Southern New Hampshire University, Western Governors University, National University, and Colorado State University Global. Beyond those, the program includes community colleges, HBCUs, local universities, and skills training providers across the country.

Amazon has committed $1.2 billion to upskill more than 300,000 U.S. employees, and the program covers far more than traditional degrees including GEDs, high school completion, English language proficiency, industry certifications, and career coaching through Kaplan.

For a broader look at how Career Choice compares to programs at Walmart, Target, UPS, and FedEx, see our complete employer tuition assistance guide.

How Amazon Career Choice Works

Amazon Career Choice operates as a prepaid tuition program, not a reimbursement program. This is a critical distinction. Amazon pays your school directly before you start classes — you never see a bill and never have to pay out of pocket and wait to be reimbursed.

Annual tuition assistance is up to $5,250 per year with no lifetime limit. Associates are no longer required to pay any amount upfront. Tuition and fees are covered before classes begin.

The payment process works through Amazon’s internal A-to-Z portal:

  1. Log in to the Career Choice portal via A-to-Z (Amazon’s HR system)
  2. Browse approved programs and partner schools
  3. Apply and get admitted to your chosen school
  4. Submit a payment request through A-to-Z before your course start date
  5. The school confirms your enrollment and Amazon pays them directly
  6. Books and fees are reimbursed upon submitting receipts through the portal

No out-of-pocket cost. No waiting for reimbursement. No loan applications.

Who Is Eligible for Amazon Career Choice

Career Choice is available to all full- and part-time blue badge hourly employees who have been employed for at least 90 days. This includes hourly non-exempt FC, CS, corporate, AWS, Amazon Fresh Stores, Amazon Books, Amazon 4-star, Amazon Pop Up, Amazon Go, and certain retail and eligible subsidiary associates.

In plain terms, this covers the vast majority of Amazon’s hourly workforce — warehouse associates, delivery drivers, fulfillment center workers, and customer service representatives.

Funding by employment status:

Full-time (40+ hours/week): Up to $5,250 per year Part-time (20–29 hours/week): Up to $2,625 per year No lifetime cap: You can use the benefit every year you remain employed at Amazon

What does NOT affect eligibility:

Your job role (as long as you’re an hourly blue badge employee) Whether you’ve taken college courses before Whether the program is related to your current Amazon job

If you’re evaluating Career Choice alongside state-funded options, our tuition and funding overview covers both paths and how to maximize them together.

Fully Covered (100% Prepaid)

Tuition at approved partner schools Required books and fees (reimbursed via portal upon receipt submission) Associate degrees and bachelor’s degrees at partner institutions Industry certifications in approved fields GED and high school completion programs English language proficiency (ESL) programs Career coaching through Kaplan

Important Limitations

Graduate degrees are not covered under Career Choice. Some partner schools offer separate tuition discounts for Amazon employees pursuing master’s degrees, but this is institution-specific.

Not every program at every school qualifies. Eligible programs must align with approved career pathways and CIP codes set by Amazon. Always confirm a specific program’s eligibility in the A-to-Z portal before enrolling.

The annual cap applies per calendar year and resets January 1. Strategic enrollment planning can maximize your annual benefit.

Funding covers programs aligned with high-demand fields based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Not all degree types at every school are approved.

Approved Fields of Study

The most popular fields of study among Career Choice participants in the U.S. are transportation, technology, and healthcare. Amazon organizes eligible programs into three main verticals:

Pathways: Industry certifications for in-demand roles including:

Information Technology (cybersecurity, cloud support, data analytics, software development) Healthcare (medical assistant, nursing, pharmacy tech, healthcare administration) Transportation and logistics Mechanical and industrial systems Business and administration

Degrees: Associate and bachelor’s degrees across a wide range of disciplines at approved partner schools, including business, computer science, engineering, education, and more

Foundations: Launched in 2022, this vertical covers:

Amazon employees pursuing a career pivot into digital marketing or AI can use Career Choice funding toward programs that qualify under the business and technology pathways. Our Digital Marketing & AI course is designed specifically for working adults, flexible, fully online, and built around the skills employers are actively hiring for right now. How to find your local partner school: Log in to the Amazon Career Choice portal at careerchoice.amazon and search by location, program type, and career field.

How to Apply: Step-by-Step

Before You Enroll

  1. Confirm your eligibility. You must have been employed as a blue badge hourly Amazon employee for at least 90 days. Check your status in the A-to-Z app under Resources → Career Choice.
  2. Explore approved programs. Browse the Career Choice portal to find schools and programs that align with your career goals. Filter by location, delivery mode (online vs. in-person), and field of study.
  3. Contact the school. Once you identify a program, reach out to the school’s Amazon Career Choice contact or admissions team. Many schools have dedicated advisors for Career Choice students.

Enrollment Process

  1. Apply and get admitted. Complete your application to the chosen school. You must be admitted and registered for classes before Amazon will process payment.
  2. Submit your payment request. Log in to A-to-Z and submit a Career Choice payment request for your school and program. Do this before your course start date — requests cannot be backdated. You can submit up to 90 days before your start date.
  3. School confirms enrollment. The institution reviews your request and confirms your course details. If approved, Amazon pays the school directly.
  4. Keep your receipts. Books and fees are not prepaid — they are reimbursed. Submit receipts through the Career Choice portal after purchase.

After You Start

  1. Use your career coaching benefit. Career Choice partners with Kaplan to provide one-on-one career coaching, academic advising, and job placement support. Take advantage of this — it’s included.
  2. Renew each semester. You must submit a new payment request each term. Benefits do not auto-renew semester to semester.
  3. No repayment required. Unlike many employer tuition programs, Amazon Career Choice tuition assistance does not have to be repaid. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay anything upfront with Amazon Career Choice?

No. Amazon Career Choice is a prepaid program — Amazon pays your school directly before you start classes. You do not pay tuition and wait for reimbursement. The only costs that require receipts first are books and fees, which are reimbursed through the portal after purchase.

How long do I have to work at Amazon before I can use Career Choice?

You are eligible after 90 continuous days of employment as a blue badge hourly employee. There is no longer a minimum one-year waiting period — Amazon reduced this requirement as part of the 2022 program expansion.

Does Amazon Career Choice cover online degrees?

Yes. The majority of Career Choice programs are available fully online. All four national partners (SNHU, WGU, National University, CSU Global) offer 100% online programs, and many local community college partners offer hybrid or fully online options as well.

Is there a limit to how many years I can use Career Choice?

No. There is no lifetime cap on Career Choice. As long as you remain employed at Amazon as an eligible hourly employee, you can use the benefit every year, for as many programs as you want, as many years as you work there.

Do I have to pay Amazon back if I quit?

No. Amazon Career Choice has no service commitment or repayment requirement. You can complete your degree and leave Amazon immediately with no financial obligation. This is a significant advantage over most employer tuition programs.

Can I use Career Choice for a master’s degree?

No. Career Choice covers associate and bachelor’s degrees, certificates, and foundational programs. Graduate degrees are not covered. However, some partner schools offer separate tuition discounts for Amazon employees pursuing master’s degrees — check with the school directly.

What if my local school isn’t an Amazon Career Choice partner?

You can use one of the four national online partners (SNHU, WGU, National University, CSU Global), which are available to all U.S. Amazon employees regardless of location. Alternatively, visit the Career Choice portal to search for approved schools near you — the network includes 400+ institutions.

Can part-time Amazon employees use Career Choice?

Yes. Part-time employees working 20–29 hours per week receive up to $2,625 per year. Full-time employees (40+ hours/week) receive up to $5,250 per year.

How does Career Choice interact with financial aid?

You can combine Career Choice with federal financial aid, Pell Grants, and scholarships. However, you cannot use the same tuition expense for both Career Choice and a federal tax credit (such as the Lifetime Learning Credit). Work with your school’s financial aid office to stack funding sources without overlap. Our tuition and funding guide covers this in detail.

Can I use Career Choice for a digital marketing or AI program?

Programs must align with Amazon’s approved career pathways and CIP codes. Digital marketing and AI programs that fall under business administration or information technology pathway categories may qualify. Confirm eligibility for your specific program in the A-to-Z portal before enrolling. Our Digital Marketing & AI course is built for working adults and designed to meet employer tuition assistance requirements — visit our enrollment page to verify your eligibility.
